Moonshine Cabaret Artists

Benjamin Smith

Singer, performer, dedicated thespian

Proving it’s not what you know, it’s who you know in Hobart, Ben was offered the singular male guest artist role in Moonshine Cabaret after meeting the Aviators at an ushering gig for Spiegeltent earlier this year. Excited by the prospect of a selection of superb songs … and sequins … Ben jumped at the opportunity.

A music theatre devotee from the day a mysterious do-gooder placed his name on his school’s audition list for Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Ben has been actively involved in Hobart’s theatrical community - both on and off stage ever since. That first musical experience was soon followed by lead roles in Rosny College productions.

Not content to leave it there, Ben continued to dedicate himself to the stage, studying voice with Jane Edwards and appearing in several iconic musicals presented by Musical Theatre Crew. Ben's most notable role (to date) is that of Dr Dillamond in The Show Company’s Hobart premiere of Wicked and he most recently graced the stage in Bijou Creatives’ production of Chicago

Alongside all this, Ben has also been encouraging youngsters to enjoy theatre, both as a teacher and through his involvement with pantomimes. In fact, this year, Ben has taken on the direction of Hobart Rep’s Christmas Pantomime, The Sisters Grimm, and is one of the youngest directors to date for this long-running annual event.

Ben has embraced the cabaret-style performance of Moonshine Cabaret, delivering magnificent interpretations of iconic tunes and the heart-rending, mournful rendition of a nouveau classic. Singing and dancing his way through, Ben is the perfect fit for a role that could have (and may have) been created especially for him!
